A group of seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
