The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
